Driving in this island in only one day, with mild temperatures, the twelve months of the year, it is possible to go from a warm coast to mild middle areas, crossing valleys and subtropical forests or reach the summit where it occasionally snows without affecting the coastal sun. Gran Canaria, has been nicknamed "miniture continent", due to its great variety, caused by the trade winds that come from the north and blow against the "wall"of the central mountain chain, provoking a dampness and a pluviometre superior to those registered in the south zone, sheltered from the winds by the mountain. Maspalomas is highly reccomended for families and couples. Stretching for around 2km (1.2 miles) and backed by Sahara-like dunes, the fine white-sand Playa de Maspalomas is regarded as the most beautiful beach on the island. Neighbouring Playa del Inglés is Europe's principal gay resort, notorious for its heady nightlife, and can become quite rowdy in high season. Maspalomas is host to a number of music bars and disco pubs, though on the whole it is a relatively quiet resort after dark, particularly by comparison to neighbouring Playa del Inglés.
