The building makes one block with the Arch of General Quarters and the Palace Square and has a long and rich history. In late XVIII c. it used to house a famous hotel "London" and accommodate foreign guests of tsar family due to its closest proximity to the Winter Palace. Later in Pushkin times there was a "Grand English Shop" downstairs where numerous luxury products were sold, from English laces to gold jewelry, wines and food. Nicolas I and the Great Russian poet were frequent customers of that place. Nowadays the ground floor is occupied with the Italian Fashion Shop.
